According to research from Juniper, Samsung is topping the smartphone sales charts again in the first quarter of 2012, but only when looking at unit sales. Revenuewise, Apple is still dominating the smartphone market.
According to Juniper, Apple has sold 25.1 million iPhones while Samsung was pushing out 46.9 million smartphones in Q1. Together, the companies own 60% of the market. In Q4 2011, the companies took ‘only’ 46% of the market.
iOS devices made Apple $22.7 billion in Q1 ($29.3 billion coming from the iPad). In the same period, Samsung made ~$17 billion from smart device sales. Leading Samsung’s charts are the Galaxy SII and Galaxy Note.
Nokia has only shipped 11.9 million smart devices under which the new Lumia’s. Less than half it shipped last year. HTC again hasn’t released any numbers and RIM has a different financial schedule. Juniper expects smartphone sales to double by 2017, marking opportunities for other players.
