Android Support in PlayBook Only 5 Days Away

February 1st, 2012 by Arjan Olsder Posted in Platforms: PlayBook OS (QNX) | No Comments »

It was one of the big salespitches from BlackBerry at the introduction of the QNX platform; it would be able to run Android Apps. Up until now, PlayBook users haven’t seen much of that promise. On February 6th however, BlackBerry will be rolling out PlayBook OS 2.0 with Android support.

Developers can start submitting their Android apps through RIM, but RIM does request developers to remove any references to Android in the Android apps. That might be because users of the PlayBook can’t see which apps are native and which of them have been built in Android. Not on their devices and not on App World.

Before uploading, developers do need to convert their APK files into BAR files. BlackBerry has a tool for that. After conversion, they BlackBerry SDK is also available inside the apps.
