Improved Restrictions for Mobile Adult Games and Content

February 6th, 2007 by Arjan Olsder Posted in Adult Games | No Comments »

A group of 23 operators have agreed to improve safety for kids along their networks. Besides shielding kids from all forms of possible abuse by other clients, operators will also shield children from adult themes content like adult mobile games. Amongst the group are Vodafone, Orange and TIM. We have seen a similar move where adult games got tugged away behind a pin code that clients need to request. Personally, I always think it should be not more difficult then using information an operator already has. Here in Holland for example, only an adult can buy a subscription. Also, most pre-paid mobile phones are personally registered, which means age of the owner is known. It all sounds so easy… and how to avoid viral distribution of such content via BlueTooth?

Open Discussion: From Console to Mobile, Will it Fit?

February 6th, 2007 by Arjan Olsder Posted in Open Discussions | 4 Comments »

It seems a never ending story is starting at MobileIndustry.biz. It all started out when Tony Pearce (Player X) announced consumer disappointment when console games are ported to mobile. According to Tony, mobile is just not there yet and the ports might harm the original console ports. It didn’t take long until THQ’s James Scalpello stood up to let us know it is not that bad at all. Now, Tim Harris form Seven Lights tells everybody console games indeed are not the right fit for porting to mobile. Personally, I think his example of Splinter Cell’s arrival on mobile is not totally right as I loved that mobile game a few years ago (even though I finished it pretty fast) as Splinter Cell is not a direct port form a console game to a mobile game. Instead it is just a totally new game, purely based on the license and storyline of its big brother. However, I like to make a call for a new open discussion at the blog. From console, to mobile, do you think it is the right fit!?

At Wireless World Forum, Omega Mobile has released a must have flash application for attendees to 3GSM. Device support is a bit limited, but the application is an excellent example of the power of flash lite for application writing. Download it here.

To expand the consumer experience of their TV show licensed mobile games, Player X has partnered with Sennari. The two together will enable Player X’s mobile games with Sennari’s PrizePlay system. By enabling the mobile games for PrizePlay, consumers will be able to bet with tokens on their in-game achievements. The tokens they win with that can be redeemed by purchasing goods or even exchange them for cash. Every game will have a starter set of these tokens. When a consumer runs out of tokens, he or she can purchase new ones. The first game to receive a PrizePlay treatment will be Family Fortunes which is ranking well within the UK ELSPA charts.
