InfoSpace’s mobile strategy

As most of you know, InfoSpace has closed the Elkware Studio earlier this year and their Q3 report ended with the following message;

"We’ve taken quick action to address the disappointing loss of business, aligning costs with future revenues to continue building on the strong foundation we have in mobile technology and online and mobile discovery," said Jim Voelker, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of InfoSpace, Inc.

Unfortunately, Jim Voelker’s closing statement says nothing about mobile games or content. The $ 57.8 million restructuring charges has the following breakdown according to MocoNews;

Bango rolls over Mediaplazza

MediaPlazza and Bango inked a deal in which Bango will take responsibility for a big part of MediaPlazza’s billing. With this deal, Bango adds 60.000 mobile content stores to it’s network. For MediaPlazza, this deal means access to wap billing all over the world with just one partner and the possibility on many operators to use Bango’s BillRank, which is a method for putting the content directly on the consumer’s bill. Bango will also accept Craditcards trough PayPal, meaning Bango offers the full scale of payment methods.

Hindy mobile games to overtake music

The Financial Express (this does give pop-ups) has put up an article about the Hindi mobile games industry. It explains how mobile games are massively catching up to the ringtone market with a current ratio of 5 games on every 7 ringtones. The main reason for this is the licensing on Bollywood titles, which attract enough attention on the local markets to make it worth while.

Symbian’s 100.000.000 milestone

Symbian announced to have a massive 100 million Symbian supporting devices in the market of which 13 million where sold in the last quarter. Symbian started in 2000 with the Ericsson A830. Currently Ericsson is joined by nine other vendors and those are backed by 250 operators world wide.
