The furious sales figures for cellphones are not simply the result of people wanting to talk to each other more, but the result of using them for mobile computer games and gambling.
So says Juniper Research, a British-based high-tech consultancy, whose report Mobile Entertainment Content Series (second edition) says that gambling and games will drive mobile entertainment from $17.6-billion (U.S.) a year in 2005 to $59-billion in 2009. More …

North American market will outstrip Asia and Europe, says publisher iFone

Wireless entertainment publisher iFone has released a forecast predicting massive growth for the US mobile gaming market, which it says will overtake markets in Europe and Asia within two years.
There are currently an estimated 35-45 million wireless gaming-enabled devices in North America, and the number is expected to triple by the end of this year. iFone CEO Morgan O’Rahilly says that as penetration increases, more consumers will opt to play games wirelessly. More …
Shares of Jamdat rise 39% on positive news

Shares of Jamdat rose $6.82, or 39 percent, to close at $24.33 on the Nasdaq Stock Market. The jump followed a 4.5 percent increase Thursday that was preceded by a 10 percent sell-off in the company’s stock between April 21 and Wednesday. More …

Nokia today announced Atari Masterpieces Volumes 1 & 2 for the N-Gage platform. Atari Masterpieces Volume 1 brings eight Atari arcade games for the N-Gage including such classics as Asteroids, Battlezone, Black Widow, Millipede, Missile Command, Red Baron, Lunar Lander and Super Breakout.
