TOKYO — Jin Saburi was drinking coffee at a Tokyo Denny’s when an urgent message hit his cellphone: "Shion, level 12, requests a rescue. Will you respond?"
The "rescue" wasn’t real — it was part of the fantasy game Mr. Saburi was playing on his mobile phone. But the plea for help was genuine: Shion was another gamer somewhere in Japan playing that same game — one of thousands of Japanese playing each other, in real time, over the cellular network.
"It’s nice to have the feeling that other people are playing along with you," says the 33-year-old Mr. Saburi. He went on to rescue Shion and so many other players that day that he ended up having a second meal at Denny’s. More …

Nokia makes waves at the 2005 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) with new N-Gage titles and the evolution of its connected mobile gaming strategy. Gameloft Defines Future of Mobile Gaming at E3 with 3D Real-Time Multiplayer Games

Nokia set to launch new 3D Pool Game on Java cell phones

Nokia, the leader in mobile communications, announced today the launch of a new game "3D Pool" (working title), expected to be available later this year on selected Java-enabled cell phones through Nokia SNAP (Scalable Network Application Package) Mobile service. At E3, the annual video game industry trade show this week in Los Angeles, one of the fastest-growing technologies may be the one that comes in the smallest package. Video games for cellular phones are beginning to catch on with consumers, and that is making hot properties of companies that develop games for tiny mobile devices.

While women enjoy playing mobile games almost as much as men, they download fewer games because games are more appealing to males, a new study says.
