In order to see the future of the American wireless gaming market, said a presenter at the Game Developers Conference here Tuesday, all one has to do is look at Japan for a preview of the devices and mobile games that will hit the United States in about three years.
The line was a joke, referring to Japan’s traditional leadership on wireless technology, but it had more than just a hint of truth to it. Fox and mobile entertainment publisher Sorrent announced today the launch of a mobile entertainment suite based on the animated feature Robots. The suite includes a game created by Sorrent, which allows gamers to take on the role of Rodney Copperbottom and participate in three different minigames. Also included are several Robots-themed wallpapers and ringtones. The suite also includes MMS capabilities, allowing fans of the film to create and send text messages that include an image and audio. The onset of mass multiplayer gaming, a widening gaming demographic, greater playability, and increased adoption of mobile services in emerging markets point to a fast expanding market for mobile games, according to a new report from Juniper Research.
“With console games, customers are obliged to make the commitment to purchase a fairly expensive piece of hardware. The beauty of mobile is that it provides a potential global audience of several hundred million 2.5G users who already have that hardware in the form of their handset,” said report author, Dr Windsor Holden.
