Pakistan Blocking Twitter

May 20th, 2012 by Arjan Olsder Posted in Analysis & Editorial | No Comments »

Depending on the Twitter API’s for the Pakistani market? You might want to look a bit further as the government from Pakistan has started blocking out the Twitter services.

Reason for blocking Twitter isn’t what you might expect. It is not the government censoring the public like in some other countries. It is because various Twitter users have started a contest in which the prophet Mohammed is depicted. Something the Muslim community is very sensitive about.

The contest is also on Facebook, but Facebook has taken action for the Pakistani viewers. Twitter didn’t. With this in mind, it is likely the ban will not be permanent, but there’s also no word on if and when the ban will be lifted.
