Symbian Botnet Uncovered

July 9th, 2010 by Arjan Olsder Posted in Analysis & Editorial, Platforms: Symbian | No Comments »

Though mobile phones have never been a real target for hackers, a security agent from NetQin claims to have uncovered a Symbian based botnet consisting of 100.000 mobile phones.

The phones are all running the S60 version of Symbian. Contaminated phones dial premium phone numbers and invite others via SMS. Sent calls and sms messages are however removed from the history tab of the phones. The Symbian Foundation stated that the possibility of this network existing is very small. Concerned consumers should turn Revocation Checking off to avoid contamination.

So, to make the long story short, these new Botnet Viruses have started causing trouble on mobile devices. Our team at NetQin has managed to detect them and we’re getting together with operators to try and put a stop to them. Our virus database has been updated. So, make sure you update your virus database to be protected from the new Botnet generation of viruses!
