S60 3rd edition, Symbian Signed problems

August 18th, 2006 by Arjan Olsder Posted in Smartphones & Tablets | No Comments »

The Mobile Phone Development Blog reports problems installing Symbian apps and games on operator branded phones from the 3rd edition series 60 devices. Problem is however, it’s not always visible that an operator has branded a phone, meaning consumers will be left in the dark. The problems concern the approval of installation of unsigned software (also known as self-signed). Normally the user will be asked if he allows unsigned software to be installed. In this case however, the user just receives an error message.

Slotland, known for their web and mobile casino games, announced they have chosen the Motorola Razr as the best device for mobile gaming. The person behind this quote is Martin Smith, mobile games manager at Slotland. The reasons for choosing the Razr? It’s the big screen (176×220 pixels) and because it’s J2me support is the best out there. “and Java is what makes our real-money slot machines work on a phone or PDA” Martin Smith said. Slotland is one of the finalists in the ME Awards for best Mobile Gambling Company. This sounds like a pot to start a discussion on. Which phone would you choose?

MauiGames claims first advertgame, but is it

August 15th, 2006 by Arjan Olsder Posted in Ad Funded Gaming | No Comments »

MauiGames has claimed their release of Hawaii Golf Classics is the first game that is fully paid by advertising in their pressrelease. The sponsoring comes from Kaanapali Golf Courses. The system uses the AdCell technology to deliver and track advertisements during the game. It sounds not only similar to the Greystripe system to me, but also there are a lot of advertgames we have seen in the market more early. Some examples are for example from Overloaded who released a game for Red Bull’s flugtag and for Adidas which don’t require any connectivity. Well

Gameloft to scoops up “Lost” and “Desperate Housewives”

August 15th, 2006 by Arjan Olsder Posted in Brand Licensing | No Comments »

Gameloft has plunged fully into TV licenses. After releasing movie hits like King Kong and War Of The Worlds, Gameloft kicked off a few weeks ago with The O.C. and now announces the purchase of the licenses for ABC’s hit series Lost and Desperate Housewives.

"The O.C. was a perfect choice for us because the story line with all of its scandal, intrigue, suspense and drama made for a great mobile game; it gave us a lot of room to play with creatively," Gameloft President Michel Guillemot said. "It’s the same thing with ‘Desperate Housewives’ and ‘Lost.’ Both shows have a massive following that resonates with millions of viewers each week."

Next to the mobile games, we can expect Ubisoft to come with next-gen games for Lost.
