Participants in Tetris(R) Tournament for Prizes win nearly $10,000 in prizes; InfoSpace Mobile has hosted more than 10 million multiplayer tournament games in 2004 InfoSpace Mobile and Blue Lava Wireless today announced the winners of the largest, cross-carrier mobile phone games tournament for prizes ever held in the U.S. During September and October, competitors in the ‘Tetris(R) Tournament Mobile Championship’ played more than 1 million games for the opportunity to win nearly $10,000 in prizes provided by InfoSpace partners Pyramat and other companies.
The grand prize sweepstakes winner will travel to Hawaii to meet Tetris creator Alexey Pajitnov. InfoSpace Mobile hosted the massive mobile games event. Nokia today announced that it has started shipping Asphalt: Urban GT(TM) a high-speed car racing game, in European stores now and in North American and Asian stores by mid-November. To entice the gamers, Nokia and Gameloft also today announced a downloadable demo for the highly anticipated N-Gage title. Cell phones are learning to share files, but the earliest efforts don’t nearly resemble the peer-to-peer renegades like Napster and Kazaa that the designers have in mind. FoneShare, an application introduced two weeks ago by Newbay Software does let people share their collections of ring tones, graphics, games, songs, movie trailers and other wireless extras with strangers. FoneShare will debut next year as a subscription service, running over privately owned and operated cellular networks, and the sharing will be done via Web sites controlled by a wireless operator, said NewBay Chief Executive Paddy Holahan. iFone Announces Wireless Content Agreement with Bullwinkle Studios

iFone, the global wireless entertainment developer and publisher, announced today that it has entered into an agreement with Bullwinkle Studios, a joint venture between Classic Media and Jay Ward Productions, Inc., to develop wireless content for mobile devices based on the legendary animated series Rocky & Bullwinkle & Friends. The new deal includes the territories of Europe, North America, Central America, South America, China, Australia and New Zealand.
Under the terms of the agreement, iFone will create games, screen savers and ring tones based on many of Bullwinkle Studios’ beloved animation franchises such as Rocky & Bullwinkle, Boris & Natasha, Sherman & Peabody and Dudley Do-Right. More …

Nokia’s Ollila Says Global Mobile-Phone Users Reach 1.7 Billion

Nokia Oyj Chief Executive Officer Jorma Ollila said there are 1.7 billion mobile-phone users globally, equivalent to 26 percent penetration, and market growth will come from camera phones and so-called smartphones.
“Today, there are more mobile phones in the world than there are fixed connections,” and wireless telephony is growing six times faster than traditional telephone use, Ollila said in a speech at the Nokia Mobility Conference in Monaco. “We have seen many countries leapfrogging fixed voice altogether and going directly to mobile service.” More …
