Sharp Introduces Retina-Like Display for Android

October 4th, 2010 by Arjan Olsder Posted in Platforms: AndroidOS | No Comments »

Sharp gives Fragmentation another push as the company introduces a mobile phone with a retina display like screen inside. The smartphone will carry a 960×480 display within a 3.5” diameter.

This new screen comes incredibly close to that of the iPhone 4 which is 960×640 pixels and introduces a new factor to game design. Normally, a higher resolution would mean a bigger screen. Now, it is just a higher DPI. This means you will not get more screen space, but more detail. In other words, if you would utilize a graphics set for a tablet, elements like buttons and text might be too small for the end user.

The Sharp IS03 will launch with KDDI in Japan and will launch next month. Though most of our readers only deliver games in Europe and the US, this is a clear sign of things to come.
