Following in Aldi’s Shoes, German discounter Lidl is also starting to sell off cheap Android-based smartphones. While Aldi launched the Wolfgang brand to promote their line-up of mobile devices, Lidle isn’t taking that route. Instead, the company is offering the smartphones under the name of their manufacturer. Huawei.
The Wolfgang smartphones have proven to be very successfull in Aldi’s home country (Germany) as well as here in Holland. The same is expected for Lidl’s offering. The deal Lidl made on the batch of phones it will sell also helps Huawei as a brand to enter the European market.
Yesterday was the first day of sales for the Huawei Ascend Y200 in Germany. The device that has a 3.2MP camera is selling for €99,99 and is expected to pop-up in other Lidl markets very soon.
Huawei has been active in Europe, but ishardly known under consumers. A lot of its products have been OEM labelled. Huawei has invested a lot of money in a marketing push that is about to happen this year as the company hopes it can cater to the same consumers that now buy their electronics from LG. So we will be hearing a lot more from this company in the months to come.
